This guide covers two critical complementary components for round rail linear motion systems: Shaft Supports (the holders) and Linear Shafts (the guides). They are essential for creating rigid and accurate linear motion assemblies, especially over long lengths.
Shaft Supports, also known as Shaft Holder Blocks or Pillar Blocks, are fixed mounting blocks designed to securely support the ends of linear shafts. Their primary function is to provide a stable, aligned foundation for the shaft, ensuring it remains parallel to the mounting surface and preventing deflection under load.
They typically consist of a base (usually aluminum or cast iron) with mounting holes and a clamp mechanism to firmly hold the shaft in place. Using two or more supports allows a shaft to be stretched over long distances while maintaining its straightness and rigidity.
SH Series (Standard Shaft Support):
Description: This is the most common type of shaft support. It features a single-piece body with a split clamp design. The shaft is placed into the semi-circular groove, and the cap is tightened with screws, creating a strong, 360-degree grip around the shaft.
Key Feature: Provides excellent grip and rigidity. Prevents shaft rotation effectively. The compact design is easy to install and align.
Application: The universal choice for supporting drive shafts, lead screws, and linear guide rods in automation equipment, conveyor systems, and machinery of all types.
SHF Series (Flanged Shaft Support):
Description: The SHF series is a variation that includes an integral mounting flange. Instead of a base with through-holes, it is secured by bolts passing through the flanged face.
Key Feature: Allows for mounting on vertical surfaces or in locations where there is no convenient horizontal surface below the shaft. Offers a different mounting orientation for flexible machine design.
Application: Ideal for space-constrained applications or when the shaft needs to be mounted perpendicular to the main machine frame, e.g., on a vertical pillar or panel.
Linear Shafts, also known as Linear Guide Rails, Hardened and Ground Shafts, or Round Rails, are the precision-machined components that act as the raceway and guiding element for linear ball bearings (LM-type bushings). Their accuracy and surface hardness are critical for achieving smooth, low-friction, and precise linear motion.
SH Series (Hardened & Ground Linear Shaft):
Description: This is the standard and most widely used linear shaft. It is manufactured from high-carbon chromium bearing steel (e.g., SUJ2), through-hardened, and then precision centerless ground to a very tight diameter tolerance and a super-finished surface.
Key Feature: The combination of high core hardness (typically 58-62 HRC) and a fine surface finish ensures long service life, low friction, and high load capacity. It is the direct partner for standard linear ball bearings (LM series).
Application: The default choice for the vast majority of linear motion applications across all industries, from 3D printers to industrial robots.
SF Series (Stainless Steel Linear Shaft):
Description: The SF series is made from stainless steel (typically 440C or 420J2).
Key Feature: Offers excellent corrosion resistance, making it suitable for harsh environments where moisture, chemicals, or cleanliness are concerns. The trade-off is generally a lower load capacity compared to hardened chrome steel shafts of the same size.
Application: Essential for food and beverage processing, medical devices, pharmaceutical machinery, semiconductor manufacturing, and marine applications.
SHF Series (Hardened & Ground Shaft with Fixed Ends):
Description: This designation can sometimes refer to a pre-assembled kit that includes a hardened and ground linear shaft (SH) that has been pre-cut to a specific length and is paired with two Shaft Supports (SH Series) at each end. The "F" may imply "Fixed" ends.
Key Feature: Provides a complete, ready-to-install supported shaft assembly, simplifying design and procurement.
Application: Used when building a custom linear motion stage or gantry where a supported shaft is required.
