Overview:
A Universal Joint (U-joint or Hooke's joint) is a mechanical coupling device that connects two rotating shafts at an angle, allowing torque and rotation to be transmitted between them. Its key function is to accommodate changes in the angle between the shafts while they are rotating, making it an essential component in applications where perfect alignment is impossible or where flexibility is required.

  • Four-Point Design: A typical U-joint consists of four main parts: a cross or spider (the central component), two yokes (forked ends attached to each shaft), and needle roller bearings (housed in bearing cups at the end of each arm of the cross). The needle rollers provide high load capacity and durability.

  • Non-Constant Velocity: A fundamental characteristic of a standard Cardan U-joint is that it does not provide constant velocity rotation. The output speed fluctuates relative to the input speed in a single cycle. This is solved by using two joints phased correctly or by using a Constant Velocity (CV) joint.
